Mary Lou Retton
At Eastwell Equestrian, we create an environment where both horses and their owners are stress free due to the quality of care. Our vision is to inspire and empower riders of all levels to exceed their expectations
Founded in 2017 Eastwell Equestrian is a small livery yard set in 26 acres in the lovely village of Helpston. With excellent hacking in the village and beyond, fantastic facilities on site and an experienced owner and staff, you and horse will be living the equine dream.
Owned and managed by Leanne Jackson who has worked for a number of internationally based riders and now competing in her own right from her base at Eastwell Equestrian. A qualified BHSI instructor, British Dressage Recognised Coach, a BD Recognised Youth Coach and Assessor and a BD listed judge, Leanne loves teaching every level of rider and believes you should enjoy your horse and be happy at whatever stage.
Pony Club, Stafford – MOUNTED GAMES
Started riding at the age of 4 having nagged her parents to take her to the local stables. Her first naughty pony was at the age of 7 which then introduced her to the Staffordshire Pony Club where she competed in the mounted games and across all the different pony club disciplines.
Apprentice, Stafford – SHOW RING AND HUNTING
Working with Nicola Holford, a national showing producer and rider at Home Farm Livery in Staffordshire. This was where Leanne spent 2 years undertaking her apprenticeship. Nicola produces and rides show horses/ponies to compete at County and National Championships, including the Royal Windsor Horse Show and HOYS. This is where Leanne learnt all her top grooming tips and how to produce horses/ponies for the show ring.
In addition Nicola owned a hunter livery yard so once the busy showing season was finished the focus was on hunter fitness and hunting.
It was at Ingestry Stables with Tim Downs, a British Horse Society training and examination centre, that Leanne completed her BHSAI training from which she has gone on to develop her teaching skills.
Head Groom, Belgium – SHOW JUMPING
The next move for Leanne was to Belgium working for Guy Slates, a well respected international producer of Grade A show jumping horses. Many of his horses went on to successful careers with a number competing at large, well known venues such as Hickstead and Olympia.
Head Groom, Scuderia La Capullara, Italy - DRESSAGE
In the early 90s Leanne went to work for Laura Cons, at the time Italy’s top dressage rider competing at international Grand Prix level. This provided her with a fantastic opportunity to learn from the very best and work closely with Laura:
· The day to day care of top class Grand Prix dressage horses.
· Working with horses to ensure they were fit and ready for international shows.
· Grooming at shows for Laura with the responsibility for complete horse care whilst away from the yard; included attending the European Championships.
· Monthly visits with Laura to her trainer in Switzerland and Germany.
· Riding, training and developing young horses.
It was here Leanne fell in love with Dressage and learnt how to train horses through the levels.
Leanne has gone on to train horses of her own through the levels to Inter 1 and became a BD listed judge and coach where she continues to gain training and development in dressage.
Katie met Leanne four years ago when Leanne came to give Katie a lesson. It was a mutual respect at first sight! Katie's cantankerous horse Roger decided to buck for most of the lesson, but Katie persevered and from then to now Katie has taken Roger to the Le Mieux National Dressage Championships , won the Veteran Associated National Championship at Novice and qualified for the National Unaffiliated Eventing Championship. Katie is now working with Roger at Advanced Medium Level. Katie helps with the riding and schooling of the horses and ponies at Eastwell Equestrian.
At Eastwell Equestrian we have some amazing people who look after the horses and the yard. We have Holly the apprentice, Matt (Leanne's husband) who helps where he can, Aaron who fixes things and our wonderful weekend staff Alice, Erin and Leia. We are also supported by a set of professionals who visit the yard regularly to keep the horses fit and healthy. See our 'who we work with page' for more details.
We have a full size all weather dressage arena to practice your Dressage test or jump your jumps! Completely floodlit to allow for all year round riding facilities.
When you want to just lunge, there is a completely separate lunge pen/ small riding pen for your use.
The land has been in the Jackson family as farmland for many years and so as typical farmers, the paddocks are very well maintained all year round.
We attempt to turn out every day, but there are those seriously wet days occasionally where we turn out in the corrals.
Once through the small, beautiful village of Helpston, you have fantastic hacking in all directions. Including Castor Hanglands, Southey Woods and the surrounding areas.
After many years of riding dressage and teaching others, Leanne wanted to give back to the sport and help more people understand the fundamentals of the sport and trained and qualified as a recognised coach. Leanne Is available for coaching at Eastwell Equestrian.
Having a passion for wanting young riders to learn the art of dressage to aid their riding and the horses development, Leanne was very keen to train as a Youth Coach and Assessor.
Leanne is fully insured, first aid qualified, DBS checked and trained in safeguarding procedures.
Leanne's passion for dressage led her to want to support the sport and encourage riders when they come down the centre line. Leanne is a listed dressage judging and is hoping though more training and observing to continue up the listings.
